British solo Pacific rower loses rudder off Miyagi

Yomiuri Shimbun

The Japan Coast Guard on Saturday morning dispatched a patrol vessel to rescue a British marine adventurer who had asked for help after losing rudder control in waters off Miyagi Prefecture.

Mick Dawson, 39, who is single-handedly rowing a seven-meter boat across the Pacific, contacted to the JCG at 5 a.m. via satellite phone to say he had lost rudder control about 661 kilometers off Miyagi Prefecture, JCG officials said.

The JCG first dispatched an aircraft, and Dawson made contact with it when it arrived on the scene, the officials said.

Dawson left Choshi Port in Chiba Prefecture on June 2 bound for San Francisco on a nonstop solo attempt to row the Pacific.
