Adrift British rowers await rescue

4 June, 2003

Two British rowers adrift in the Indian Ocean are expected to be rescued by an Australian naval helicopter today.

Mike Noel-Smith, 45, and Rob Abernathy, 31, hope the aircraft from HMAS Newcastle will arrive at around 10pm local time.

"We are looking forward to that and have been very heartened by the responses to our calls," said Mr Noel-Smith, who was injured in a storm.
